Chain Analysis: Understanding What Led to Unwanted Behavior

You did something you regret. In the aftermath, you might feel shame and a desperate wish to forget it happened. But forgetting doesn't prevent it from happening again. Understanding does.

Chain analysis is a DBT tool that traces the sequence of events leading to problematic behavior—so you can identify where to intervene next time.

    What Is Chain Analysis?

A chain analysis breaks down behavior into:

    1. Vulnerability factors: What made you more susceptible?
    2. Prompting event: What started the chain?
    3. Links: Thoughts, emotions, and actions that followed
    4. Target behavior: The problematic behavior
    5. Consequences: What happened as a result
    6. Solutions: Where you could intervene differently

    Why It Works

    • Replaces Shame with Curiosity: "What led here?" instead of "I'm terrible"
    • Reveals Intervention Points: Every link is a potential place to use a skill
    • Makes Patterns Visible: Multiple analyses reveal recurring themes
    • Builds Self-Knowledge: Deepens understanding of your triggers and responses

    Example Chain

    • Prompting event: Partner didn't respond to text for 2 hours
    • Link 1 (thought): "They're ignoring me"
    • Link 2 (emotion): Anxiety (6/10)
    • Link 3 (thought): "They're going to leave me"
    • Link 4 (emotion): Panic (9/10)
    • Link 5 (urge): Need to get their attention
    • Target behavior: Sent angry accusatory text

For each link, ask: "What skill could I have used here?"
